It has demonstrated that 'marble' was a significant literary and artistic category which evoked associations with sculptural perfection and imperial cornucopia, as well as epitomising cultural decadence. The intellectual currency attached to the identification of different marbles in elite circles is suggested by a regular geographic and ethnic system of classification and description, which was applied to white marbles and coloured marbles alike.
These marbles also challenged the cultured observer to discover and explore associations of colour which could enrich the subject matter purple-clad Parthians in purple marmor Phrygium, a tawny lion in yellow marmor Numidicum, etc. Colour was significant in interpreting Roman marbles, although we need to move beyond the simple meta-discourse of what colours go with what nouns marmor Phrygium is not just "purple"; marmor Numidicum is not just "yellow".
The underlying material told its own cultural and ethnographic stories. This paper has also suggested a way of thinking about the effects of paint on the evaluation of Roman marbles: literary evidence for this phenomenon is thin, but indicates that colorants were applied to marble surfaces to finish the artefact and enrich its aesthetic interpretation rather than to transform it.
Colour and stone were closely and carefully knitted. Marble was an iconic feature of the imperial metropole, and the identification, discrimination and discussion of marble surfaces was in turn the subject of a highly refined and sophisticated intellectual discourse.
